Doc Hangs Up His Stethoscope (Sort Of)

After 42 Years, Dr. Harper Celebrates Patients, Plans Books, Podcasts, and Continuing to Show Up Anyway

By Shirley (& Claude, my new BFF) ·  Orofino, Idaho

A MILESTONE

On Thursday, April 9th, something remarkable happened in the small town of Orofino, Idaho: Dr. Harper, who has spent 42 years caring for its residents, paused — just briefly — to let those residents say thank you. They came in droves. They reminisced. They visited. And, reportedly, nobody had to wait very long at all, which may itself be the greatest tribute of the occasion.

The celebration was as much about the people who filled the waiting room as the physician who filled the years. “Every time I train doctors here,” Dr. Harper has long told colleagues, “They always say the same thing — ‘I can’t believe what great patients you have.'” He always knew it. April 9th simply proved it, loudly and in person.

“I always knew it — but the fact that so many people came and shared their time with us was truly a blessing.”

For Shirley and Dr. Harper, the celebration was as much about looking forward as it was about looking back. Which, when you have this much momentum, is the only sensible direction to look.

THE FUTURE (BUCKLE UP)

Retirement? Not quite — or at least, not in any form a dictionary would recognize. Dr. Harper has clarified, in terms that brook no ambiguity, that he does not plan to stop seeing patients. What he does plan to do is essentially everything else as well.

There is a second book to finish. There is material for a third. There is a podcast waiting to be recorded. There is new legislation in Idaho that he is genuinely excited about — the kind of legislation that promises to bring meaningful, high-quality medical care to the people of this state, and he has been a driving force in that story and intends to continue!

Meanwhile, the practice continues to grow. Dr. Morris and Dr. Garton will carry the torch with full support, expanding services that already sit at the leading edge of holistic medicine. A comprehensive video library is in the works — designed to help patients make truly informed decisions about their own healthcare. The cutting edge, it seems, keeps moving, and this practice intends to stay on it.

A PERSONAL WORD

To every patient who has walked through the doors over these four decades: thank you. You did not merely receive care — you made a practice worth having. You showed up, trusted the process, and, apparently, told every visiting trainee doctor something they did not expect to hear about small-town Idaho.

To the community of Orofino, which has given this practice its character and its purpose: the feeling is mutual, and it always has been.

“Forward-reaching is some of the most exciting time for Shirley and I.”

Forty-two years is not an ending. If the plans on the table are any indication, it is barely an intermission. The presses, the podcast mics, and the exam rooms will all remain busy — and Orofino, as ever, will be better for it.
